• This fabulous replica of a Gupta period Buddha is seated with his hands in the dharma chakra mudra. Dharmachakra in Sanskrit means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolizes one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha. In this mudra the thumb and index finger of both hands touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma. The three remaining fingers of the two hands remain extended.

• The Buddha did not deny existing religious knowledge or speak against the prevalent Hindu way of life. He spoke only of what had been revealed to him. The rich and the poor, the higher castes and the lower castes formed his audience. As he traveled far and wide, the ranks of his followers swelled many Hindus acknowledged him as the ninth incarnation of Vishnu.
