Hindu Goddess Kali Standing on body of Shiva Black Stone Statue 16" from India.

Kali in this statue is shown with 6 hands and standing on the corpse of Shiva. She holds a severed head, dripping blood in one hand and holds various armories in other hands. This is the Roudra (angry) form of Lordess Parvathy. The severed head is of a demon named Rakthabija. Even after the war, the anger of Kali never drops and she goes on a killing spree, destroying the world. To calm her, Shiva throws himself on her feet, which ends his life. Kali, shocked on killing her husband, calms down and bring him back to life. The various arms she hold signifies that human mind has different eternal and spiritual, enemies which can not be destroyed with a single weapon, but by use of various techniques. The head in her hands signifies ego, which must be destroyed to attain Nirvana or Moksha. She gives an idea of her immortality and existence beyond the life of this universe, by killing Shiva who is considered to be the ultimate destroyer of universe. She is considered equal to Brahma.

Kali is one of the most significant divinities, and many texts and contexts treat Kali as an independent deity, not directly associated with a male god. In case she is associated with a male god, it is invariably Shiva. In this aspect, she represents the omnipotent Shakti of Shiva. She holds both the creative and destructive power of time. The earliest reference to Kali in Hindu tradition date back to the 6th century, and locate her in the battle fields fighting asuras. Her temples are recommended to be built away from human habitations. Vana Bhatta's 7th century drama Kadambari features a goddess named Chandi, an epithet of both Kali and Durga.
